Airbrush

Badger Sotar Review

A lot of fine folks bought in Badger’s Sotar airbrush during one of the many sales.  Questions were asked; here I come with answers.

A while back, looking at some toys, I discovered that Amazon had a whole lot of deals on Badger products.  This came in shortly after the every brush for $54 anniversary sales. We are talking 30+ % off on all things or so, including the Sotar.

So the deal is not around anymore, but the Sotar has been repriced ( or looks like it ) to a regular price of $120 more or less.
My buddy Amir asked me if that airbrush was any good over on Facebook.  He probably thought I forgot about his question, but baby, Max Dubois never forgets a pretty girl.  I didn’t answer straight away, not because the answer isn’t obvious, but because I wanted to make it more in depth.

Is it any good? Short answer is yes.  The Sotar is an amazing machine and I loved it a lot.

Should you get one? Well, that’s the in-depth part of the question.

Not the Jack to all yo’ trades

Now to answer my main man Amir’s question: is it any good?  Yes, it’s a banger and it’s the best airbrush I’ve owned.  And, side note, I never share a product link, no matter the deal, that I wouldn’t buy myself.

However, this airbrush is not for everyone and not for everything.

If you don’t have an airbrush, this is not the one to get you started.  It’s not an all rounder like the Krome or 105 Patriot that can do mostly anything, including the bulk of the work: base coats and large surfaces.

This is the getting real with yo’ home boy section of this post:  90% of all airbrush need or people wanting to get into airbrush is to do base coats and general highlights.  And that’s perfectly fine; it’s also the best place to learn how to airbrush, not by trying to spray white dots in the eyes,

The sotar is great for this small details and precision work.  I’ve painted daemon prince’s eyes with that airbrush.  It makes OSL a joke, and you can go super deep with highlights and shading because of how precise it it.

Because of how precise it is, it’s also quite fragile and clogs a lot if you’re not careful and somewhat proficient with airbrush use and cleaning in general, this makes it not suited for large projects and army-sized airbrushing.

Pros:

1- Occasionally, it’s out-of-this-world discounted
2- Insane detail and precision spraying

3- Comes with the Badger Guarantee

Cons:

1- Costs a buttload of money on the regular

2- Does not hold a lot of paint

3- Ill-suited for general use like base coats and large surfaces.

This is my general impression on the Sotar; after seeing people recommend it like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.  I’m not gon’ front, it’s pretty dope; but it’s definitely not a must buy.  More so if you don’t already have an airbrush.

*I used only Badger product in this post to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges.  As you know, I don’t have sponsors and and talk about this based on my own experience.  However, all these links are from my affiliate program on Amazon; if you buy it from there, I get some dollars.
